Jaylen Waddle names Alabamaâs best skill-position players
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle had the opportunity to name Alabama’s top skill-position players while making the media rounds for Bounty at the Super Bowl, and the former Crimson Tide standout stuck mainly with teammates, including in the NFL.
Waddle’s selections as Bama’s best included quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, running back Derrick Henry, wide receiver DeVonta Smith and tight end Irv Smith Jr.
Henry is the only one who didn’t play with Waddle at Alabama. Waddle was a teammate on the Crimson Tide with Irv Smith Jr. for one season, Henry for two seasons and DeVonta Smith for three seasons.
Waddle and Tagovailoa remain teammates in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins.
Henry completed his college career in 2015 as the Heisman Trophy winner for a CFP national-championship team. Waddle didn’t arrive at Alabama until 2018.
DeVonta Smith also won the Heisman Trophy for a CFP national-championship team in 2020, when the Crimson Tide posted an undefeated record.
Waddle and Smith were selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft in a span of five picks, with Waddle going to the Dolphins at No. 6 and Smith going to the Philadelphia Eagles at No. 10.
Through three NFL seasons, Waddle has 251 receptions for 3,385 yards and 18 touchdowns in 47 regular-season games and Smith has 240 receptions for 3,178 yards and 19 touchdowns in 50 regular-season games.
The fifth choice in the 2020 NFL Draft, Tagovailoa became Miami’s starting quarterback in the seventh game of his rookie season. In 2023, Tagovailoa led the NFL with 4,624 yards, including 1,014 to Waddle.

A second-round draft choice of the Tennessee Titans, Henry became Alabama’s career leader in NFL rushing yards in 2023 as he finished as the runner-up for the league rushing crown for the second straight season. Henry led the NFL in rushing in 2019 and 2020, and he became the eighth player in league history to run for 2,000 yards in a single season in 2020.
A second-round selection of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2019 NFL Draft, Irv Smith Jr. has had a career beset by injuries. He has played in 49 regular-season games and missed the entire 2021 season. With the Cincinnati Bengals in 2023, Smith had 18 receptions for 115 yards and one touchdown to push his career totals to 109 receptions for 973 yards and 10 touchdowns.
