Jaylen Mbakwe explains Alabama transfer portal departure: ‘Business decision’

Alabama football cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe confirmed his departure from the Crimson Tide via the transfer portal on Monday. Mbakwe made clear what might have driven the choice to leave Tuscaloosa after one season in the caption of his post.

“Love my bama family,” Mbakwe said in the caption of his Instagram post. “Business decision.”

Mbakwe joined Alabama as a five-star prospect out of the Clay-Chalkville in the 2024 recruiting class. He contributed 15 tackles and an interception during his lone season with the Tide.

He also became one of the faces of Alabama’s young group of players, co-hosting a podcast with fellow five-star freshman Ryan Williams. Mbakwe’s Monday post included a statement noting how much he enjoyed playing for the Tide.

“This was not an easy decision,” Mbakwe said in the statement. “But I believe its the best state for my personal and professional development and the future I’m working towards for myself and my family.”

He also thanked coaches and others involved with the UA program.

“I’d like to extend my gratitude to Coach (Kalen) DeBoer and Coach (Freddie) Roach for believing in me and giving me the chance to prove myself,” Mbakwe said. “Your guidance and encouragement have shaped me in ways I can’t fully express.

“To my fellow teammates, your support, mentorship, and brotherhood have made every moment meaningful and I’ll always treasure the bonds we’ve created. To the Crimson Tide, your passion and loyalty have been a constant source of inspiration. I’m thankful for each and every one of you.”

Mbakwe became the third Alabama defensive back to enter the portal during the current undergraduate entry window, which began on Dec. 9. The transfer portal will remain open until Dec. 28.

Alabama still has one game remaining in its 2024 season, against Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl. That game is scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. CT on Dec. 31 in Tampa, and will be aired on ESPN.
