Jax State’s Harper named CUSA Coach of Year, Pierre named player of the year

Four members of Jacksonville State’s men’s basketball team claimed Conference USA honors, including Jaron Pierre Jr. earning player of the year and coach Ray Harper nabbing Gene Bartow Coach of the Year honors.

Along with the two yearly awards, Mason Nicholson was tabbed to the all-defensive team and Quel’Ron House picked up all-freshman team honors.

One of the top scorers in Division I play this year, Pierre ranks fourth in Division I with 21.8 points per game and 16th in total field goals with 231.

He ranks atop CUSA in scoring while ranking second in 3-point percentage (.394), third in free throws made (122) and sixth in assists per game (3.7), also leading the conference in total minutes.

Pierre has scored in double figures in 30 of his 31 games, including a game-high 36 points against MTSU, which included 10 3-point baskets.

Harper was named Gene Bartow Coach of the Year award, named after former UAB coach and College Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Gene Bartow.

The Jax State coach helped lead the Gamecocks to their sixth 20-win season at the Division I level, all but one of which came under Harper.

Picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll, Jax State finished second in CUSA and will serve as the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament in Huntsville.

Nicholson, also named an all-conference honorable mention, ranks third in Conference USA in blocks per game (1.7) and leads the Gamecocks with 52 on the season.

His regular season campaign also saw him lead Jax State in total rebounds (250), averaging 7.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for the Gamecocks.

House, who stepped in as a full-time starter at guard after a season-ending injury to Jamar Franklin, was the Gamecocks’ second-leading scorer in league play (8.3 points per game) also leading the team with 58 assists across that span.

A former first-team all-state selection and a finalist for Mr. Basketball in Kentucky, he’s averaging 7.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3 assists per game this year heading into the CUSA tournament.

Jax State (20-11, 12-6 CUSA) will serve as the No. 2 seed in the CUSA tournament at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

The Gamecocks will face either No. 7-seeded Western Kentucky or last-place Florida International in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
