Jasper woman indicted in her boyfriend’s death said gun went off as she tried to take it from him

A Jasper woman has been indicted in the 2024 shooting death of her boyfriend in Birmingham.

A Jefferson County grand jury returned the murder indictment against 31-year-old Kayla Michelle White on March 7, and the indictment was made public Tuesday.

White’s boyfriend, 27-year-old Joshua “Jack” Hayes, was killed just before 11 a.m. April 2 at his home on Navarro Lane.

Police at the time said a domestic disturbance had escalated to gunfire, killing Hayes.

White, who called 911 after the shooting, told detectives that Hayes was threatening suicide. When she tried to take the gun away from, she said, the gun discharged, striking Hayes one time, according to court records.

White was questioned that day, and released without being charged.

A couple of months later, detectives obtained the murder warrant for White. She was taken into custody during a traffic stop in Helena.

Jefferson County District Judge Maria Fortune initially denied White bond after an Aniah’s Law hearing citing, in part, White’s multiple previous convictions on theft-related crimes in St. Clair and Jefferson counties, as well as Denver.

In January 2025, White was given a $40,000 bond, put on electronic monitoring and ordered to complete one year of drug treatment while awaiting trial.

Hayes’ obituary described him as a “man of many talents, interests and hobbies.”

Hayes was a skilled musician who played trumpet, French horn and violin, previously playing with the Huntsville Youth Orchestra and the East Limestone marching and concert bands. As a youth, he was also a member of the Young Marines.

A trial date for white has not been announced.
