Jase McClellan aggravates foot injury, Saban unsure of SEC championship status

Amid the chaos of the 88th Iron Bowl, an unfortunate sight was captured on the Alabama football sideline.

While Jalen Milroe stomped onto the field, yelling after the Tide completed a 27-24 comeback, running back Jase McClellan was out of his pads, his left leg in a walking boot and his stride assisted by crutches.

Speaking on the SEC Championship teleconference on Sunday, UA head coach Nick Saban provided an update on the Tide’s leading rusher: McClellan reaggravated a foot injury and UA will wait the next 48 hours to get a better sense of his availability against Georgia.

“He’s had a little foot injury all year long. He tweaked it in the game. He’ll be day-to-day this week,” Saban said.

McClellan, a senior from Aledo, Texas, leads No. 8 Alabama (11-1, 8-0) in carries, rushing yards and second to Milroe’s 12 rushing touchdowns. McClellan has spearheaded UA’s running back rotation with 929 total yards and six touchdowns. Overall, UA is ranked 44th nationally with 177.6 yards per game.

His final rush against Auburn came in the third quarter for three yards. Roydell Williams and Jam Miller split duties as the Tide mounted a rally with five minutes left. McClellan finished with 66 yards on 15 carries.

By this time of year, nearly every team is dealing with nagging injuries. The Tide welcomed back linebacker Deontae Lawson after a multi-week injury. He and JC Latham joked during the postgame celebration while wearing matching walking boots.
