Jared Hollins runs, passes MGM past Williamson
South Alabama commit Jared Hollins threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as Class 7A No. 9-ranked Mary G. Montgomery avenged last year’s 21-20 overtime loss to Class 5A Williamson with a 41-2 rout of the Lions at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Friday night.
Hollins finished the night 10-of-15 passing for 319 yards and an interception. He also rushed four times for 65 yards and touchdown runs of 12 and 61 yards. Troy Flowers rushed for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass.
“I feel like we played unselfish ball tonight and the offense showed up,” said Hollins. “A lot of guys got touches, and we spread it out.”
“Experience was a big part of it,” said MGM head coach Zach Golson. “I can’t say enough about our coaches. They came with the right mindset. We came in with a pretty good plan, and our guys came out and executed. Jared threw the ball well, made good decisions and got it to the right guys. He’s a great decision maker and the guys around him made plays.”
Williamson missed several key players due to disciplinary issues, and head coach Antonio Coleman said he had to make do at some positions with seventh graders.
“Certain situations happen and you’re forced to play football without certain individuals,” he said. “You’re put into a situation where you have to go with what you have. Hats off to them (MGM). They had a good game plan. They came in and dominated.”
The Vikings went up 14-0 when Shondell Harris scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to cap off their first drive and added Hollins’ 12-yard touchdown run moments later after the Lions fumbled deep in their own territory and later committed a personal foul.
In the second quarter, MGM exploded for four more scores in a span of nearly 11 minutes. Flowers scored on an 8-yard run, Kamron Smith caught a 62-yard touchdown pass from Hollins, Flowers took a short pass from Hollins and raced 95 yards for a score, and with time running out in the first half, Hollins went on a 61-yard scoring scamper against the stunned Williamson defense.
The Lions avoided a shutout with 1:56 left in the game when they scored a safety.
“Every time we came back on the field, we kept our foot on the pedal,” Hollins said. “We knew there was another two quarters to play, and fortunately we were able to get the twos and threes in there and getting everybody some reps.”
Both teams are in action Thursday night. MGM travels to play Charles Henderson, while Williamson hosts LeFlore in Class 5A Region 1 action.
