Jared Hollins, MGM down Baker to stay undefeated
The most magical season in Mary G. Montgomery High School history continues to roll on.
South Alabama quarterback commit Jared Hollins passed for two touchdowns in the first half then ran for two in the second half to lead the No. 4. Vikings to a 35-14 win over No. 7 Baker in the Battle of West Mobile.
It was the 14th straight regular-season victory for the Vikings, who are 8-0 for the first time since 1965.
“This was a crazy environment,” Hollins said. “There were more people here for warmups than I’ve ever seen for a game. I thank God for the opportunity to be a part of this and be a part of this team.”
Mary G. Montgomery took the lead one minute into the game on a 72-yard run by Jayvian Hawthorne. Baker immediately responded with an impressive drive that included two fourth-down conversions and a 47-yard touchdown pass from Mississippi State commit Josh Flowers to Auburn commit Bryce Cain.
But the Vikings took control from there, scoring two more touchdowns in the second quarter for a 21-7 halftime lead.
The start of the second half was strong for the Hornets, as Flowers found Troy commit Kevin Beckham Jr. for a 32-yard score to cut the lead to 21-14.
Baker got the ball back midway through the third quarter but had to punt from deep in its own territory. The punt was short, going out of bounds at the 10. Three MGM plays netted only 1 yard, but coach Zach Golson decided to go for the score instead of a 26-yard field goal that would have extended the lead to 10 points. Hollins made the decision a smart one when he avoided pressure and escaped around right end for a 9-yard touchdown run.
Hollins added another 5-yard scoring run with 6:56 left to put the game away.
By The Numbers: MGM’s offense was incredibly balanced. The Vikings ran the ball 31 times for 206 yards, while Hollins completed 13 of 19 passes for 201 yards.
Play of the game: Fans will be talking about Hollins’ 51-yard touchdown pass to James Bolton in which he spun away from a pass rusher and launched a missile 55 yards down the field. But equally impressive was his 4-yard touchdown pass to Jaiden Smith on fourth down. Hollins avoided a rusher but was still under duress as he rolled left. Smith started wide right but raced all the way across the field. Hollins found him in the back of the end zone. “That was the more impressive play,” Golson said. “He spun away and put it in a Coke bottle.”
Game ball: The Mary G. Montgomery secondary deserves much of the credit for the win. The Vikings picked off four passes, including two by senior Jariell Lett.
Coachspeak: “In a big game like that you can’t give the ball away,” said Baker coach Steve Normand. “Our team is going to fight as hard as they can every night. But we gave a very good team too many opportunities.”
They said it: “We were ready to play,” Lett said. “I wouldn’t want to play for anybody else.”
Recruiters in attendance: Among the many college coaches in attendance were Kane Wommack and Major Applewhite from South Alabama, head coach Tony Elliott and quarterbacks coach Taylor Lamb from Virginia and Mississippi offensive coordinator Kevin Barbay.
Next week: Baker (6-2) is off next week before hosting Fairhope the following week to wrap up Class 7A, Region 1 play. The Hornets still have a chance to host a playoff game if they can beat the Pirates. Mary G. Montgomery will visit Daphne next Friday in a game that will either earn MGM the region crown or throw the region race into a mess.
