Jameson Williams sets Alabama NFL record on TD run

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams has scored five touchdowns during his NFL career. The past two have come on the ground.

The former Alabama All-American’s most recent score came in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday as he got the Lions out to a 7-0 lead with 42-yard run on an end-around to cap Detroit’s opening possession with 13:18 left in the first quarter against the San Francisco 49ers.

The play produced the longest touchdown run in the postseason by a former Alabama player. Williams’ TD run surpassed the 35-yard scoring run by Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry in a 22-21 victory over Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the AFC playoffs on Jan. 6, 2018.

Only two wide receivers have had longer touchdown runs in NFL postseason games. James Lofton ran 71 yards in the Green Bay Packers’ 37-26 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in a divisional-round game on Jan. 16, 1983, and Ahmad Merritt ran 47 yards in the Chicago Bears’ 33-19 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in a divisional-round game on Jan. 19, 2002.

Williams’ final touchdown of the 2023 regular season came on a similar play and went for 19 yards in a 33-28 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Dec. 3.
