James Taylorâs Huntsville concert rescheduled
Many music stars from the 1970s still with us are now well into their 70s. So concert postponements and tour rejiggering by these artists are pretty inevitable. On Sunday, folk-pop legend James Taylor, known for hits like “Fire and Rain” and “Sweet Baby James,” rescheduled three upcoming shows, including a performance at Huntsville, Alabama’s Orion Amphitheater previously set for June 20.
According to a post on Taylor’s website, the rescheduling is due to a severe case of laryngitis: “Doctors have put James on strict vocal rest and advised him to reschedule his upcoming performances this week.” Taylor’s Huntsville concert has been pushed to Aug. 22. Cincinnati and Mt. Pleasant, Minnesota concerts have also been tabled, to Aug. 24 and Aug. 26 respectively.
In a statement, Taylor said, “I really hate to have to postpone these shows and it’s not something I take lightly. I thought I could push through but I’m at the point now if I don’t take these days off, I risk doing permanent damage. So very sorry to everyone who has tickets this week, I hope you’re able to hold onto your tickets for the new dates. I look forward to picking the tour back up in Milwaukee on Saturday.”
During his career, Taylor’s won Grammy Awards, been inducted into the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame and overcome addiction. Boston born and Chapel Hill-raised, his pile of hit songs includes “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You),” “Carolina on My Mind,” and “You’ve Got a Friend.”
Early in his career, Taylor was the first-ever non-British artist signed to The Beatles-founded label Apple Records. During the ‘70s, he was married to fellow superstar singer/songwriter Carly Simon. Taylor’s 1976 “Greatest Hits” album achieved the rare air of diamond certification, with more than 10 million copies sold.
Now 75, his most recent album is 2020′s “American Standard,” a Grammy-winning set of interpretations of standards lie “The Nearness of You” and “My Blue Heaven.”
Tickets to Taylor’s Huntsville show are $59 to $185 (plus fees) via axs.com. He recently performed in Alabama on Jun 18 at Pelham’s Oak Mountain Amphitheatre, the night before his next three shows were canceled, and June 15 Orange Beach’s The Wharf Amphitheater.
Both recent Alabama shows opened with “Something in the Way She Moves,” off Taylor’s 1968 Apple Records debut. Some trivia to show how interconnected classic rockers’ lives often were: Taylor’s song helped inspire Beatles guitarist George Harrison’s chart-topping ode to then-wife Pattie Boyd, “Something.” Boyd, one of the top fashion models of her day, later was famously the inspiration for “Layla,” the Derek and Domines smash cowritten by Eric Clapton, who Boyd wed after leaving Harrison.
