James Spann recovering after unexpected abdominal surgery: ‘All is well’

Birmingham meteorologist James Spann has informed followers that he’ll be sidelined for a few days after severe abdominal pain on Monday evening led to “a quick middle of the night surgery.”

“I prefer for all of the posts on this account to be about you, and not me,” Spann said on X/Twitter. “Things that are helpful and relevant to you.”

“Will make a quick exception here since the word is out,” Spann continued. “I missed WeatherBrains [a podcast] last night due to severe abdominal pain, and wound up going through a quick middle of the night surgery.

“It was a closed loop bowel obstruction, which came out of nowhere. But all is well and I will be back at full speed in a few days. Thanks to everyone at Grandview for their kindness and professionalism in the middle of the night. And, we are enjoying the “grand view”… (The post included an apparent selfie of Spann in a hotel bed and an image of clouds.)

The post drew hundreds of “get well soon” comments from fans. Aside from his work at ABC 33/40, Spann has become a prominent figure on social media: His X/Twitter feed has become a clearinghouse for weather photos, traffic updates and other news of interest.
