James Clemens scores in all 3 facets of game to down Grissom
James Clemens scored on offense, defense and special teams to beat Grissom 35-7 and clinch the Class 7A, Region 4 title Thursday night.
The visiting Jets finished the regular season 7-3 overall and 6-1 in the region. They led 21-0 at halftime at Milton Frank Stadium in Huntsville.
James Clemens scored on Cam Berry’s 2-yard run, Devon Cooper’s 20-yard run and Ty Marsh’s 2-yard run in the first quarter.
“I thought we had a really good first quarter and played pretty clean,” James Clemens coach Chad McGehee said. “And we got sloppy in the second and third quarter on offense. I was really proud of the defense and special teams coming up with the two scores in the third quarter.”
The third quarter brought Ty Doughty’s 52-yard punt return and London Townsend’s 61-yard fumble return for the Jets.
Host Grissom (2-7, 1-6) scored on Seth Leebern’s 30-yard pass to Chase Porter with 1:22 left in the game.
Play of the game: Townsend, a junior outside linebacker, scooped up a Grissom fumble and scored at 6:44 in the third. Anthony Ortiz kicked the extra point for a 35-0 lead.
“I just saw the ball come out, I jumped on it,” Townsend said. “And my mind went to scoop and score.”
Stat sheet: James Clemens – Berry had seven carries for 41 yards and a touchdown. Besides a punt return touchdown, Doughty had four catches for 50 yards and three carries for 12 yards. Cooper had two carries for 21 yards and a touchdown plus one catch for seven yards. DJ Williams had 11 carries for 59 yards and one catch for 20 yards. Marsh ran for a touchdown and completed 9-of-17 passes for 100 yards. Grissom – Leebern completed 12-of-20 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown with an interception.
By the numbers: 239 – James Clemens total yards with 131 rushing and 108 passing. 155 – Grissom total yards with 46 rushing and 109 passing. 4 – Grissom turnovers on three fumbles and one interception. 10 – James Clemens wins in 10 games against Grissom all-time.
Game ball: Doughty deserves it because of his punt return touchdown and production on offense.
Coachspeak: “It means we won the region championship. And that’s always special and that’s always a goal that we have. I’m proud of us having the opportunity to host the first round and we’re going to try to get over that hump this year.” – McGehee.
“We made a lot of mistakes. Penalties, turnovers, missed tackles. After the first quarter, defense played much better – tackled and communicated well. We had two severe injuries in the first quarter. It was good to see kids coming in, picking up their slack.” – Grissom coach Rich Dutton.
They said it: “Tonight we handled business. We came out, handled business. We tried to come out, put them out early so all our guys could come in. I’m just glad we won the region.” – Berry.
