Jalen Hurts ties NFL record set by Cam Newton

With his second touchdown on Monday night, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts tied the NFL record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in one season with his 14th.

The record had been set by Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in 2011.

Of the 10 quarterbacks who have run for at least 10 touchdowns in a single season, Newton and Hurts are the only ones who have done so more than once. In addition to 14 TD runs in 2011, Newton had 10 in 2015 and 12 in 2020. Hurts had 10 in 2021 and 13 in 2022. They are the only quarterbacks to run for more than 12 touchdowns in a season.

On Monday night, Hurts ran 3 yards for his first score with 6:31 left in the first quarter and got into the end zone for the second time on the Brotherly Shove, the Eagles’ mass-attack QB sneak, from 1 yard out with 4:43 remaining in the third quarter.

Ten of Hurts’ touchdowns this season have come on 1-yard plunges. Of Newton’s 14 touchdowns in 2011, six were 1-yard scores.

Hurts is a former Alabama quarterback, and Newton is a former Auburn quarterback.
