Jalen Hurts surpasses Cam Newton touchdown total

Jalen Hurts’ 1-yard touchdown plunge allowed the Philadelphia Eagles to take a 28-7 lead over the San Francisco 49ers with 43 seconds left in the third quarter of the NFC Championship Game on Sunday.

It also gave the former Alabama standout the most touchdown runs by a quarterback in one season (including the playoffs) in NFL history.

Former Auburn All-American Cam Newton established the NFL single-season record for touchdown runs by a quarterback in 2011, when he ran for 14 as a Carolina Panthers rookie. The Panthers did not participate in the playoffs that season.

Newton broke the record of 12 set by the New England Patriots’ Steve Grogan in 1976.

During the 2022 regular season, Hurts ran for 13 touchdowns to rank second to Newton’s record.

In Philadelphia’s playoff opener last week, Hurts scored on a 5-yard run in a 38-7 victory over the New York Giants.

The touchdown against San Francisco gave Hurts the all-season NFL record for touchdown runs by a quarterback, although Newton continues as the record-holder for regular-season play.

Newton and Hurts are the only quarterbacks to run for at least 10 touchdowns in the regular season more than once. Newton also had 12 in 2020 and 10 in 2015, when he was the NFL Most Valuable Player. Hurts ran for 10 touchdowns last season as a rookie.

Hurts’ touchdown on Sunday capped a 15-play, 91-yard drive that was extended when the 49ers were flagged for roughing the punter.

With the football at the San Francisco 35-yard line after the penalty, Hurts gained all but 2 yards to the end zone on five runs that included an unnecessary-roughness penalty against the 49ers when he was hit out of bounds.

Before that sequence, Hurts had 10 yards on six rushing attempts in the game. During the regular season, Hurts ran for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns on 165 carries.
