For only the second time since the start of the 2022 NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles lost a regular-season game with Jalen Hurts at quarterback on Sunday. In the process, the New York Jets’ 20-14 victory knocked off the last undefeated team in the league in the 2023 campaign.

For the second time in his career, Hurts threw three interceptions, and the final one, which safety Tony Adams returned 45 yards to the Philadelphia 8-yard line with 1:50 to play, set up the Jets’ game-winning touchdown on the next snap.

“It’s a tough one, for sure,” Hurts said, “but it’s an opportunity for us to grow. These things and these moments build a ton of character, so if you go into it and handle it the right way, you can turn a negative situation into a positive, and that’s what we plan to do. And it takes a ton of hard work, it takes a ton of discipline and diligence and focus and understanding Rome wasn’t built overnight. It’s a process, and we’re going to trust in that process for us as a team.”

Hurts completed 28-of-45 passes for 280 yards with one touchdown and ran for 47 yards and one touchdown on eight carries.

New York picked off Hurts three times despite playing without its starting cornerbacks. One of the interceptions was the first of defensive tackle Quinnen Williams’ career as he picked off his former Alabama teammate with quick hands on a deflected pass.

After the game, Hurts’ focus was on Philadelphia’s response to the loss – a point he repeatedly returned to during his postgame press conference.

“It’s about how we respond and what our mentality is moving forward,” Hurts said. “These things happen. This is the NFL. That’s a great team we played today, and a danged great defense we played today. You turn the ball over four times, you shouldn’t expect to win. It’s an opportunity for us to look ourselves in the mirror and respond, and I have confidence this team will do so. …

“A lot of guys that are hungry, eager to fix the mistakes that we had today and made today. Everybody will harshly hold themselves accountable as they should – that’s top down – and we’ll just continue to move forward.”

Hurts scored the game’s first points on a 3-yard run with 3:03 left in the first quarter, and the Eagles led 14-3 after he tossed a 9-yard TD pass to running back De’Andre Swift with 5:32 remaining in the first half.

But the Eagles followed with a lost fumble, two punts and a 37-yard field-goal miss sandwiched by interceptions before Philadelphia was stopped on downs on its final possession.

The Eagles got the football with 1:46 to play after the Jets took the lead, and Hurts had one completion for 2 yards on four passes.

The loss dropped Philadelphia to 5-1. Last season, the Eagles won their first eight games before falling to the Washington Commanders 32-21 on Nov. 14, 2022. Philadelphia also lost four turnovers in that game.

“You look at this game, and you have so many missed opportunities and really so many mistakes as if you’re kind of giving it away,” Hurts said. “Look at the last loss we’ve had in the regular season, or I’ve had in the regular season, against Washington last year, and look at the turnovers. You turn the ball over four times, you shouldn’t expect to win. And so give credit to them and how hard they played and the tenacity and the resilience they played with. The Jets team played with great resilience, but we gave them too many opportunities.”

Philadelphia will play another one-loss team next week when the Eagles host the Miami Dolphins at 7:20 p.m. CDT on Oct. 22.
