Jalen Hurts scores Alabama’s first Super Bowl TD
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts capped the first possession of Super Bowl LVII with a touchdown on a quarterback sneak on Sunday.
The 1-yard touchdown run with 10:09 left in the first quarter not only allowed the Eagles to take a 7-0 lead over the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL championship game for the 2022 season, it also was the first scored by an Alabama alumnus in the 57 Super Bowls.
Former Crimson Tide quarterbacks Bart Starr threw three touchdown passes across the first two Super Bowls and Ken Stabler had a TD toss in Super Bowl XI, but no former Alabama player had scored a touchdown in the NFL’s big game until Hurts pushed the football across the goal line on Sunday.
Hurts got the chance to score after a video review took away running back Kenneth Gainwell’s 4-yard touchdown run and placed the football a few inches from the goal line instead. Hurts scored on the next snap.
The Eagles moved 75 yards in 11 plays for the first points of Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Hurts also had an 11-yard run and completed 4-of-5 passes for 54 yards during the series. Three of the passes were caught by wide receiver DeVonta Smith for 41 yards. Smith and Hurts are former Alabama teammates.
Hurts ran for 13 touchdowns during the regular season, the second-most in one campaign for an NFL quarterback. Sunday’s touchdown run was his third in the playoffs this year.
