Jalen Hurts pays for prep football player’s funeral
A senior at North Shore Senior High School in Houston, Jarvon “Veezy” Coles was laid to rest on Saturday after a funeral service at Light of the World Christian Fellowship in Humble, Texas.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Sheila Jackson Lee, the U.S. representative for Texas’ 18th congressional district, declared Saturday as Jarvon Coles Day, and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts sent a video message to the 18-year-old’s family.
Hurts also paid for the honor student’s funeral, NFL Network reported on Tuesday.
A former Alabama standout, Hurts was a star player at Channelview High School, which is about 5 miles from North Shore. Coles played linebacker for the Mustangs, who are rivals of Channelview’s Falcons in the UIL’s Division 6A Region III.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Coles was shot while attending a party on March 9. Initial reports were that a partygoer outside the house had passed out, but when emergency responders arrived, they found a shooting victim instead.
Gonzalez said two shooters fired in the direction of the party from about one block away, then fled the scene in a vehicle.
No arrests have been made in the shooting.
