Jalen Hurts’ new backup aims to be asset for Eagles
Less than two years ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers used the 20th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft on quarterback Kenny Pickett. He became the starter in the fifth game of his rookie season and stayed in that role through the 12th game of his second campaign.
Pickett had ankle surgery and missed the final five games of the regular season and Pittsburgh’s playoff contest in 2023. Now he’s looking at backing up Jalen Hurts with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024.
In the past week, the Steelers signed Russell Wilson to play quarterback and traded Pickett to Philadelphia.
“I think it’s a good reset,” Pickett said on Monday. “I think getting the chance to play on this team in that quarterback room with a couple of great guys, helping those guys out anyway I can and just be ready if my number’s called somewhere down the road. It’s a crazy league, crazy business. Just trying to put my best foot forward and be an asset for this team.”
In addition to Hurts, the Eagles also have Tanner McKee on the quarterbacks depth chart after last season’s backup, Marcus Mariota, left in free agency for the Washington Commanders.
“I talked to Jalen, I talked to Tanner in the room,” Pickett said. “They seem like great guys. Then I got with (quarterbacks) coach (Doug) Nussmeier and coach (Kellen) Moore (the offensive coordinator) today. Got the chance to meet them. I just want to be a great addition to the room and help the team out anyway I can.”
Hurts is entering his fourth season as Philadelphia’s No. 1 quarterback. The former Alabama standout has been a Pro Bowl selection the past two seasons and was the runner-up for The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award in 2022.

“Seems like a great guy,” Pickett said. “Really looking forward to working with him. I think he’s an unbelievable player, and I can learn a lot of things from him on the field, off the field.”
Before becoming the Steelers quarterback, Pickett starred at the University of Pittsburgh. But he was ready to leave after being replaced.
Philadelphia traded a 2024 third-round draft pick and two 2025 seventh-round draft picks to Pittsburgh for Pickett and a 2024 fourth-round draft choice.
“I just felt like it was time from the things that transpired,” Pickett said. “I wanted to get a chance to go somewhere else and continue to grow my career.”
Now Pickett could get to play at Lincoln Financial Field after growing up going to games at the Eagles’ stadium.
“It’s pretty unbelievable, honestly,” Pickett said. “I’ve been coming to games at the Linc since I was like 5 years old. I have great memories of my dad taking me here. My grandfather, all my family members coming out to the games together, just having great memories. And the fact that, hopefully, I can help provide some great memories for some other families now coming up, it’s pretty surreal and a full-circle moment for me.”
