In 2022, Hurts finished second in the voting for The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award as he became the first quarterback in NFL history to have a passing-efficiency rating of at least 100 while also running for at least 10 touchdowns. The Maxwell Football Club chose Hurts as the winner of its 64th Bert Bell Professional Player of the Year Award.

After the Eagles won the NFC championship, Philadelphia’s season ended with a 38-35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII. In the league’s title game for the 2022 season, Hurts became the only player in NFL history to have at least 300 passing yards, one touchdown pass, 70 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in the same game. He was the third player in Super Bowl history to account for at least 350 yards of total offense and four touchdowns and also tied the Super Bowl record for points with 20.

In April, Hurts signed a five-year contract extension with the Eagles worth $255 million.

Hurts’ selection makes it four years in a row that a former Crimson Tide standout in the NFL has been the ASWA’s Professional Athlete of the Year, following Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry in 2019 and 2020 and Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs in 2021.

Hurts received the SEC Offensive Player of the Year Award as a freshman with Alabama in 2016. He transferred to Oklahoma for the 2019 season after Tua Tagovailoa became Alabama’s starting quarterback in the 2018 season.
