Jalen Hurts meets with Michael Jordan and the Board of Greatness
Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni responded to yet another offseason rating that didn’t seem to hold Jalen Hurts in the regard due the Super Bowl-winning quarterback this week.
Perhaps Sirianni should have simply said: My quarterback is in Greece with Michael Jordan and the Board of Greatness right now.
Over the weekend, the former basketball star had the athletes representing his shoe and apparel brand gather at a retreat to exchange ideas and explore plans, and Hurts, a sneaker connoisseur, came away with one of the 180 pairs of Air Jordan 1 Low OG Board of Greatness retros.
Sirianni did not go that mike-drop route, though. Instead, he had a lot more to say after an ESPN survey of “league executives, coaches and scouts” placed Hurts as the ninth-best quarterback in the NFL, although the first sentence of his remarks makes a succinct summary: “I think that’s (expletive).”
“He plays the most important position in all of sports,” Sirianni went on to say during a meeting with Eagles beat reporters. “And it’s the most ultimate team game there is. And what I admire about him is his selflessness of doing anything we need to do to win, whether that’s throw — I mean, obviously, anybody who plays quarterback is going to want to throw it 50 times a game, but he will do anything. If he has to throw it 50 times a game, he’s ready to do that. If he has to hand it off 50 times a game, he’s ready to do that. …
“We’re talking about the most ultimate team game there is, and he does whatever he needs to do to win each and every game.”

The ESPN survey listed the eight quarterbacks (in order) ahead of Hurts as the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen, Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow, Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson, Washington Commanders’ Jayden Daniels, Los Angeles Rams’ Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert and Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff.
One of the supposed knocks on Hurts is that the former Alabama quarterback is surrounded by more talent than any other signal-caller in the league and therefore doesn’t have to do as much to win.
“You name me a team that wins and wins consistently that doesn’t have good players around you,” Sirianni said. “Like, you name me a coach that doesn’t have good players around him that wins. Like, you don’t win with bad players. And it’s the same thing — you don’t win with bad players if you’re a quarterback either. It’s a team game. Yeah, that always bothers me, to be honest with you, when it’s talked about because it’s football. …
“One of the reasons I love football so much is that it takes everybody to accomplish your goals. Listen, you name great quarterbacks — you can go ahead and start naming great quarterbacks. I’ll tell you their great receivers and their great defense. You know? Whether it’s Brady with (Rob) Gronkowski or Brady’s defenses, Mahomes with (Travis) Kelce, Steve Young with Jerry Rice. The list goes on and on and on.
“It’s good debate, I guess. I wouldn’t even say it’s a good debate. But it’s a debate that people are able to have. But yeah., I guess my first thing, my first initial thing was, this is (expletive).”
In their second trip to the NFL championship game in three seasons, Hurts and Philadelphia defeated Kansas City 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9 to conclude the 2024 campaign. Hurts won the Most Valuable Player award for the game.
Hurts and the rest of the Eagles are scheduled to report to training camp on Tuesday. In Hurts’ fifth season as the starting quarterback, Philadelphia will be seeking a fifth consecutive postseason berth for the second time in franchise history. The first five-year playoff run from 2000 through 2004 yielded one Super Bowl appearance, which the Eagles lost to the New England Patriots 24-21 on Feb. 6, 2005.
The NFL’s 2025 regular season will start in Philadelphia on Sept. 4, when the Eagles play the Dallas Cowboys.
