Jalen Hurts knows what’s ‘Better than a Touchdown’
In Jalen Hurts’ line of work, there’s hardly anything better than a touchdown. But “Better than a Touchdown” is the title of the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback’s first children’s book.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to have my own children’s book,” Hurts said. “And today, that dream finally comes true. My debut book, ‘Better than a Touchdown,’ is now available for preorder. With this book, I’m excited to extend some of my lessons learned throughout my journey to the next generation and, hopefully, it strikes a chord of resilience and encourages our kids, the reader, whomever to believe in themselves. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the lessons learned, the mentorship and books just like mine.”
Hurts made the announcement about “Better than a Touchdown” from Houston’s Tice Elementary School, where he was once a student, during NBC’s “Today” on Monday.
The book will be published by Penguin Random House’s Flamingo Books.
“Jalen is so excited for the new school year because this is the year he’ll finally get to try out for the football team,” the book description from the publisher reads. “But when he arrives at school, he learns the unthinkable – that the football team has been cut. He and his friends are devastated. But Jalen isn’t ready to give up, and with some advice from some friends, maybe, just maybe, they can save the day.
“‘Better than a Touchdown’ is a love letter to the power of community, being there for one another and how a piece of good advice can change the course of a day. Told with Jalen’s signature wisdom and gorgeous art by Nneka Myers, ‘Better than a Touchdown’ carries a message we can all learn from: That working together, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish.”
“Better than a Touchdown” will be available on March 10, 2026. It costs $19.99 and contains 40 10-inch by 10-inch pages.
Hurts is preparing for his sixth NFL season and is coming off an MVP performance in the Eagles’ 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9.
Hurts played three seasons at Alabama, with the Crimson Tide reaching the CFP national-championship game annually. Hurts won the SEC Offensive Player of the Year Award in 2016. For his final college season, Hurts transferred to Oklahoma and finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.
