Jalen Hurts getting new backup in Philadelphia
Jalen Hurts will have a new backup as the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback during the 2023 season. Gardner Minshew has left in NFL free agency for the Indianapolis Colts, and the Eagles are signing Marcus Mariota to fill his slot on the depth chart.
Mariota will come aboard on a one-year contract, the Philadelphia Inquirer and ESPN reported on Friday, after starting 13 games for the Atlanta Falcons in 2022.

Mariota finished the season on injured reserve, rookie Desmond Ridder started at quarterback for Atlanta’s final four games of the season, and the Falcons released Mariota on Feb. 28.
The second player picked in the 2015 NFL Draft, Mariota served as the Tennessee Titans’ starting quarterback until Ryan Tannehill replaced him in the seventh game of the 2019 season. Mariota spent two seasons as Derek Carr’s backup with the Las Vegas Raiders before signing a two-year, $18.75 million contract with Atlanta last offseason.
Mariota’s deal with the Eagles is being reported as worth $5 million.
In 2022, Mariota completed 184-of-300 passes for 2,219 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions and ran for 438 yards and four touchdowns on 85 carries.
In his second season as the Eagles’ starting quarterback, Hurts led Philadelphia to the NFC championship and a spot in Super Bowl LVII. The Pro Football Writers of America picked Hurts as the All-NFC quarterback for the 2022 season after the former Alabama signal-caller completed 306-of-460 passes for 3,701 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions and ran for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns on 165 carries in 15 regular-season games.

Hurts missed two games with a shoulder injury, putting Minshew in the lineup for a 40-34 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 24 and a 20-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints before Hurts returned for the regular-season finale.
In his fourth NFL season and second with Philadelphia, Minshew completed 44-of-76 passes for 663 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions and ran for 3 yards and one touchdown on seven carries.
Minshew followed Philadelphia offensive coordinator Shane Steichen to Indianapolis. The Colts chose Steichen as their next head coach last month.
Indianapolis released quarterback Matt Ryan on Wednesday. Ryan started 12 games for the Colts in 2022, with rookie Sam Ehlinger making three starts and Nick Foles two at quarterback for Indianapolis, too. Ehlinger and Foles remain on the Colts’ roster, and Indianapolis holds the fourth pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
