Jalen Hurts files fifth trademark application
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has filed a fifth trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, this time for the words “Rare-air.”
The latest application was filed on Aug. 21. Trademark attorney Josh Gerben reported the application this week.

As with the other applications, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s entry on the filing indicates Hurts plans to use the words on clothing – “men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, namely, shirts, jackets, sweatshirts, pants, shorts, vests, gloves, socks, sweaters, underwear, skirts, hats and belts.”
Gerben Intellectual Property lists “Rare-air,” along with previous trademark filings by Hurts with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office of “Hurts so good,” “I had a purpose before anyone had an opinion,” “Breedof1″ and “Purpose before opinion,” as pending applications for Hurts.
The trademark application “I had a purpose before anyone had an opinion” is based on something the former Alabama standout said during one of his press conferences in the week before Super Bowl LVII. At the time, Hurts knew he’d said something quotable because he interjected: “I know y’all liked that one.”
In his second season as the Eagles’ starter, Hurts helped Philadelphia win the NFC championship and reach Super Bowl LVII, where it played the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 12.
Hurts was asked: “Why do you think you’re having so much success and making it look easy so early in your NFL career when the critics said you wouldn’t become a very good NFL quarterback?”
“I’m going to have to ask them that question. Let’s see if they can answer that,” Hurts said. “Everything I want to do is just quantify my work, just quantify the work that I put in. I don’t really like to look at the results. Never like to look at the results, just the process of getting better. You can look back and say that there’s so many things that motivate me and drive me to want more, to be the best. And why do I just keep getting up and going and going and going? But I had a purpose before everybody had an opinion. It’s not about anybody else. I know y’all liked that one. But it’s not about anybody else. It’s just about going to do it because that’s what you want, that’s what you set out there to go do.
“I’ve always been my biggest critic. As the success has come, it’ll continue to stay that way. But I also hold the respect of my peers and their words, my coaches, my family, my dad, my brother, (Eagles) coach (Nick) Sirianni, (quarterbacks) coach Brian (Johnson), the guys that I play with – in the end, those are the guys that lay it all out on the line.”
Philadelphia fell to the Kansas City Chiefs 38-35 in the NFL championship game for the 2022 season.
But Hurts followed up his regular-season performance, which led to a second-place finish in the voting for The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Award, with a singular game in Super Bowl LVII.
In Super Bowl LVII, Hurts became the first player in NFL history to have at least 300 passing yards, one touchdown pass, 70 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in the same game.
Hurts and Philadelphia will kick off the 2023 season on Sept. 10, when the Eagles square off against the New England Patriots.
