Jahmyr Gibbs 2023-24 rookie season recap: An impressive showing to send the Lions to the playoffs
Appearing in 15 games for the Lions, Gibbs ran the ball 182 times for 945 yards, good for an average of 5.2 yards per carry. He found the end zone 10 times on the ground, which led all rookie running backs. He was also a threat in the passing game, hauling in 52 catches for 316 yards and a touchdown.
As one of the top offensive rookies in the NFL, Gibbs finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting. He finished behind C.J. Stroud, Puka Nakua, and his teammate Sam LaPorta. Gibbs’ 945 rushing yards was second among rookie running backs, trailing only Bijan Robinson’s 976 yards for Atlanta.
Gibbs shined in the playoffs, garnering 238 total yards and scoring a touchdown in all three of Detroit’s playoff games. Now with a full season under his belt, the Alabama product seems primed for a big sophomore season in 2024-25.
If you are confident in Gibbs having a monster season, you can bet on him to win NFL MVP. He has odds of +25000 to win NFL MVP on DraftKings, and +30000 on FanDuel.
Lions 2025 NFC Championship odds: Will Gibbs spearhead another deep postseason push in 2025?
Head coach Dan Campbell has changed the culture in Detroit into a winning one. This season, Campbell led the Lions to a 12-5 record in the regular season, bringing home Detroit’s first division title in 30 years. In turn, the Lions hosted a playoff game in Detroit for the first time since 1993.
In the postseason, the Lions took down the Rams in the Wild Card round, and defeated the Buccaneers in the Divisional Round. However, they ultimately fell short against the 49ers in the NFC Championship game.
Detroit was close to making a trip to Super Bowl 58, holding a 24-7 lead at halftime in the NFC title game. However, San Francisco pulled off a historic comeback to win 34-31. That loss stings, but with most of their top-tier talent back next season, the Lions are looking to take the next step and reach Super Bowl 59.
Oddsmakers are giving Detroit odds of +750 to win the NFC on FanDuel, giving them the third-best odds to win the conference. Only San Francisco (+225) and Dallas (+600) are ahead of Detroit.
