Jaguars keeping former Alabama safety

Fourteen players, including four with Alabama football roots, have signed reserve/future contracts with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the NFL team announced on Monday.

All the players from Alabama high schools and colleges were on the Jaguars’ practice squad when Jacksonville’s season ended in a 27-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the second round of the AFC playoffs.

All but one was with the Jaguars throughout the 2022 season. Safety Deionte Thompson (Alabama) joined Jacksonville’s practice squad on Oct. 18 after being waived three games into his fourth season with the Arizona Cardinals.

Neither tight end Gerrit Prince (UAB) nor wide receiver Seth Williams (Paul Bryant, Auburn) played for the Jaguars this season. Prince was an undrafted rookie, and Williams was in his second season.

Center Darryl Williams (Bessemer City) played one game as a practice-squad elevation in 2022, his NFL debut in his third season.

It had been previously reported that Prince, Darryl Williams and Seth Williams would be returning to the Jaguars.

A player signed to a reserve/future contract can be added to an NFL team’s roster when it expands from 53 to 90 players for the offseason on March 15, the first day of the NFL’s 2023 business year. The newly signed players become eligible to participate in offseason workouts, minicamps and OTAs as team members.

Only players who aren’t on NFL active rosters can sign reserve/future contracts.
