Jacksonville State lands commitment from former Kentucky, Rutgers quarterback

Former Kentucky and Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt has committed to Jacksonville State, he announced on social media Sunday afternoon.

The quarterback will have one year of eligibility remaining with Jax State.

He was graded as a 3-star prospect in the NCAA transfer portal by 247Sports and On3.

Wimsatt served as a backup at Kentucky behind starter Brock Vandagriff, playing in eight games for the Wildcats this season.

He completed 16 of his 39 passes for 287 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions while running the ball 49 times for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

The native of Owensboro, Kentucky, transferred to the SEC program from Rutgers after three seasons.

Wimsatt’s most productive season came in 2023, where he started all 13 games for the Scarlet Knights. He threw for 1,735 yards, nine touchdowns and eight interceptions while posting a 47.8% completion percentage; he also ran for 497 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He’s played in 33 games at the collegiate level, also starting six in 2022.

Out of high school, Wimsatt was a 4-star prospect and was graded as the No. 25 quarterback prospect in the nation for the class of 2021. He also held offers from Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, Oregon, Michigan and Notre Dame after his career at Owensboro High.
