Jacksonville State falls 30-16 at Coastal Carolina
Coastal Carolina dominated the second half in a 30-16 victory over Jacksonville State on Saturday night in Conway, S.C., dealing the Gamecocks their first loss of the season.
The Chanticleers (1-1) led just 10-9 at halftime, and 16-9 as time wound down in the third quarter. However, they scored two long Jared Brown touchdowns in a span of 5:30 in the third and fourth quarters to take control of the game.
First came a 48-yard touchdown pass from Grayson McCall to Brown, which made it 23-9 with 2:46 left in the third quarter. After Jax State punted with 12:30 to play, Brown ran 77 yards for another touchdown and a 30-9 Coastal lead.
“That’s embarrassing. A total lack of discipline,” JSU coach Rich Rodriguez said. “Just horrible coaching. Totally undisciplined and that goes back to coaching. Penalties on defense, not finishing drives on offense, horrible play calls in the red zone. We should have been up a couple of scores (at halftime).
“They’re a solid team and have a great quarterback. There’s no week off. We’ll practice next week and get it corrected.”
Jacksonville State (2-1) totaled 393 yards of offense, but scored only one touchdown. That came in the fourth quarter, a 19-yard run by quarterback Logan Smothers that set the final score.
Otherwise, the Gamecocks got only three Alen Karajic field goals. Karajic hit from 40, 39 and 28 yards, the last giving the Gamecocks a 9-7 lead in the second quarter.
Coastal Carolina’s Liam Gray then made three straight field goals — from 28, 25 and 43 yards — to put his team up 16-9. The Chatincleers opened the scoring with Brayden Bennett’s 8-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Smothers and Zion Webb split time at quarterback for JSU, with Webb starting and completing 9 of 18 passes for 150 yards while rushing for 21 yards on 11 carries. Smothers went 7-for-10 for 57 yards passing and rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown on six carries.
Malik Jackson led the Gamecocks in rushing with 73 yards on 18 carries. Kolbi Fuqua had a big game defensively with 18 tackles and two tackles for loss.
McCall completed 21 of 29 passes for 268 yards and a touchdown. Brown caught seven passes for 93 yards, while his 77-yard touchdown run came on his only carry of the game.
Jax State is back home next Saturday, hosting Eastern Michigan at 4 p.m. at Burgess-Snow Stadium.
