Ivey sets election to fill seat vacated by Plump conviction

Gov. Kay Ivey has set dates for a special election for the Birmingham-area district in the Alabama House of Representatives vacated by the conviction of former state Rep. Fred Plump.

The governor scheduled the District 55 special primary for Tuesday, Sept. 26. If necessary, the primary runoff will be Tuesday, Oct. 24. The special general election will be Jan. 9, 2024.

The deadline for qualifying with major political parties will be July 25 at 5 p.m. The deadline for all independent candidates and/or minor parties is Sept. 26 at 5 p.m.

Plump, who was in his first year in office, resigned in May after pleading guilty to federal charges of wire fraud conspiracy and obstruction of justice.

District 55 is in central Jefferson County, extending eastward from Fairfield into Birmingham.

“Those in public office must be held to the highest standard, and it is unfortunate that the good folks in House District 55 have been left without representation due to poor decisions made by the individual who formerly held this seat,” Ivey said in a press release. “I encourage everyone in this district to get out and vote during this special election to ensure you have a strong voice advocating for you in the Alabama Legislature going forward.”
