Ivey names short-term replacement for Autauga County sheriff
Gov. Kay Ivey announced three appointments today, including a temporary replacement for Autauga County Sheriff Joe Sedinger, who died Monday after a brief battle with cancer.
Sedinger, 72, a Vietnam War combat veteran, was buried today with full military and law enforcement honors, according to the Montgomery Advertiser. Sedinger was set to begin his third term on Jan. 16. Chief Deputy David Hill will fill the position until that date, the governor’s office said.
“Your service on this short-term basis will be most appreciated while our team identifies candidates for appointment to fill the new vacancy that will exist once the new term begins,” Ivey wrote in the appointment letter to Hill, whose appointment is effective immediately.
Ivey also announced the appointment of Greg Reid as circuit judge of the 41st judicial circuit, which is Blount County. Reid fills a vacancy created by the suspension of Judge Steven D. King, who was charged with ethics violations by the Judicial Inquiry Commission. The Alabama Court of the Judiciary will hear King’s case. Judges are automatically suspended when charged by the JIC. King, who has served since 2007, was already slated to leave office in January. Reid’s appointment is effective Jan. 17. Blount County has only one circuit judge.
In addition, Ivey announced that she appointed Keith Blackwood as the Mobile County district attorney effective Jan. 1, a position Blackwood was already set to fill beginning Jan. 16.
In November, Blackwood won the election to replace District Attorney Ashley Rich, who did not seek another term. The early appointment of Blackwood was necessary because Rich went on supernumerary status, or retirement status, before the term ended.
