‘It’s addictive’: With football visits set, Landon Duckworth now chasing a basketball state title
Landon Duckworth is the top-rated quarterback in Alabama for the Class of 2026. But that doesn’t mean he has to limit the state championships he wins to football.
Duckworth and the Jackson Aggies won the Class 4A state basketball championship last year before claiming the football title in December. Now, they’re back in Birmingham and just one win away from another basketball championship after beating Brooks 37-34 Tuesday in the semifinals.
Duckworth said that if there’s a state champion being crowned in Alabama, he should be part of the winning.
“It’s addictive. Literally,” said Duckworth, who also teamed with Keeyun Chapman, EJ Crowell and Keegan Chapman to win the 4×100 relay state championship. “Once you get it one time, you just want it again. I grew up watching other high schools go to State. I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Getting there for the first time and seeing what it’s like, it’s addictive. You just love being up there. We need to repeat over and over.”
Jackson basketball coach Anthony Hayes sees the championship mentality carrying over from one season to the next.
“I say it all the time. It’s a great time to be at Jackson High School,” Hayes said.
Duckworth, Crowell and Keeyun Chapman are all among the top 11 football prospects in the state, according to On3. Keegan Chapman is one of the state’s fastest athletes. Crowell is the No. 1 running back in the country after recently reclassifying to the Class of 2026.
While Crowell could likely end up playing college football in state, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Duckworth is looking elsewhere.
“I know I’m going to visit Ole Miss, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida State,” said Duckworth while wearing an Ole Miss polo after Tuesday’s win. “I’ve got a good relationship at Auburn, so I’ll go visit there, too. I don’t really hear too much from Alabama.”
There’s plenty of time to worry about college later.
For now, there’s another championship to win.
