Isolated severe storms possible today; more Wednesday

Parts of Alabama will face the possibility of severe storms over the next three days.

Damaging winds, hail and a tornado or two will all be possible, especially on Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

The first round of storms may arrive in north Alabama this afternoon and track to the east and south through the evening, according to the National Weather Service.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center is maintaining a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather for all of north Alabama, part of central Alabama and the northwest part of south Alabama (see the map at the top of this post).

A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible. Today’s storms could have winds strong enough to take down tree limbs and power lines.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT/THURSDAY MORNING

Then on Wednesday there will be another chance for severe storms. The Storm Prediction Center has a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe storms for the northern third of Alabama. An area to the south in central Alabama will have a Level 1 risk.

The timing is expected to be later Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Here’s the severe weather outlook for Wednesday:

Areas in yellow will have a Level 2 risk of severe weather on Wednesday, mainly late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.SPC

A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible. The weather service is expecting a complex of storms to develop northwest of Alabama and drop down into the state late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Where and when that storm complex moves into the state depends on when and where it gets started, which will likely be Arkansas and Kentucky.

Wednesday’s storms could also bring damaging winds and hail, but a tornado or two also can’t be ruled out, according to the weather service.

THURSDAY

Finally a cold front is expected to push through the state starting on Thursday, bringing a low chance for storms to northern and central Alabama. However, more storms could break out in south Alabama before the front arrives.

The Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 2 out of 5 risk on Thursday for south Alabama and has the rest of the state in a Level 1 risk.

Here’s the outlook for Thursday:

There will be a Level 2 risk for severe storms on Thursday for all of south Alabama. The rest of the state will have a Level 1 risk.SPC

The weather service in Mobile will be watching on Thursday afternoon for a line of storms to develop in south Mississippi and track eastward into south Alabama. Those storms could have damaging winds and hail, but the tornado threat is expected to be very low.

The most likely time for storms for south Alabama on Thursday will be later that afternoon into early Friday morning.

THEN WHAT?

No severe weather is expected after Thursday, and the weather service is expecting cooler temperatures — and lower humidity — to be the story over the weekend.
