Isolated severe storms possible in Alabama on Saturday

A few strong to severe storms will be possible in much of Alabama starting on Saturday afternoon, according to forecasters.

The strongest storms could bring winds strong enough to topple trees and power lines. There could also be heavy rain. The tornado and hail risks are very low.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has placed a Level 1 out of 5 (marginal) severe weather risk over most of Alabama for Saturday. The exception is far east Alabama, which could see rain and storms but likely no severe storms.

A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible. The most likely time for storms will be Saturday afternoon (from about noon) through the evening hours.

The National Weather Service said that scattered storms will be possible in the early afternoon ahead of a possible complex of storms (a mesoscale convective system, or MCS) that is expected to move into west Alabama through the early evening.

Areas that get more than one storm could be at risk for flooding. The weather service is forecasting much of Alabama to get a half-inch to an inch of rain through Sunday morning. Some areas in southwest Alabama could get even more — 2 to 3 inches.
