Isolated severe storms possible Friday near Gulf coast
Rain will be the weather story on Friday across Alabama, and there is the potential for a few strong to severe storms close to the coast.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather for Friday just along the Alabama and northwest Florida coasts. In Alabama that includes most of Mobile and Baldwin counties.
A Level 1 (or marginal) risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible.
The National Weather Service in Mobile said there will be a low-end potential for wind gusts up to 40 mph and hail near the coast.
Forecasters said rain and storms will become more widespread across south Alabama this morning ahead of an approaching area of low pressure. A line of stronger storms could form near the coast and move through the region from west to east — generally from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
There will also be another hazard at the coast today — the potential for rip currents. There is a high risk for rip currents along the Alabama and northwest Florida beaches today.
There will also be rough surf with waves of 3 to 5 feet along the coast, the weather service said.
A few rumbles of thunder will also be possible across the rest of south Alabama and the southern part of central Alabama, but severe storms aren’t expected.
Rain is expected through the day today as an area of low pressure moves across the state. Rain could linger into Saturday morning in some areas, according to the weather service. Rain amounts will range from just a little to an inch.
Temperatures are expected to be on the mild side statewide despite the clouds and rain:
Temperatures will be in the 60s in 70s across Alabama on Friday.NWS
Temperatures through the weekend and into next week will stay relatively mild, according to weather service forecasts.
After today severe weather isn’t expected across Alabama through next week.
