Is now the time for Mac Jones, Patriots to win again?
New England arrived in Germany on Friday for its Sunday game against the Indianapolis Colts in Frankfurt. But Patriots quarterback Mac Jones already had been trying to make the adjustment to Central European Standard Time.
“I think for me, it was just getting onto Germany time early in the week and then just bump everything up,” Jones said of the six-hour time difference between Frankfurt and Foxborough, Massachusetts. “Make sure that I’m getting everything throughout the week. Had a good practice today, so just have to carry that over, get recovery, hydrate, do all the right things and then we’ll be ready for Sunday.”
While Jones and the Patriots changed time zones, they can’t adjust their 2-7 record, the worst mark in the AFC. But that will change, too, with the result of Sunday’s game. Will New England spring forward or fall back?
Jones thinks the game could spring-board New England into a better second half. The Patriots have their bye week after Sunday’s game, then return to action on Nov. 26 against the New York Giants, who also have a 2-7 record.

“I always talk about try not to focus on the results, but there can be great momentum in this game,” Jones said. “It’s a momentum game, within each game and within game to game. I’m looking forward to going out there and competing and trying to get a win on the board. Get into the bye week and focus on building momentum.”
In the first five games of the season, Jones had five touchdown passes and seven interceptions. In the past three, the former Alabama All-American had five TD passes and two interceptions, although the Patriots lost two of those games.
“Everyone wants to look at it negatively when maybe you’re not playing as well as you can,” Jones said. “But honestly, I’m going to look at it as a positive. And what can I get better at? What are my weaknesses? Where do I need to improve? It’s not going to happen overnight. I’ve said that before up here. I’ve got a lot of stuff to work on, and every week I’m going to work on something and just try to close the gap on that and get rid of some bad habits that maybe I formed or things like that. It’s sports. That happens, right? You might form a bad habit, but it might take a couple weeks, months, years to fix, and the really good ones can fix it quickly and stay on top of it. …
“Identifying, is a part of the thing, and taking action is the next step, so I definitely want to improve on certain things. And in-season sometimes it’s hard, but at the same time, you’ve got to figure out how to keep this thing rolling.”
Among the NFL’s 32 teams this season, New England ranks 31st in points per game and 27th in yards per game. But the Indianapolis defense ranks 29th in points allowed per game and 26th in yards allowed per game.
“I try look at it each week and focus on the game plan for the week,” Jones said. “It’s a really tough business. It’s the NFL. There’s a lot of good defenses out there. For us, we’ve got to make sure we know what the game plan is for this week and focusing on where we are. ‘We’ve got to be where our feet are,’ is what I always say. Focus on: Is it a pass? Is it a run? What’s my job? How can I do it really well? And then make sure that everyone around us is communicating, you know, upfront with the receivers, it takes all 11, so that’s very important, and I feel like we’ve actually made progress there. We just need to finish these games.”
The Patriots and Colts will square off at 8:30 a.m. CST Sunday at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt. NFL Network will televise the game.
“I told the guys: Who would’ve thought, when you’re little, that you’d be playing in a game internationally in the NFL?” Jones said. “It’s pretty cool, so like I said, just try to be where your feet are. Try not to focus on anything else besides playing the game that we’ve played since we were little. That’s very important, and we’re looking forward to putting on a good show.”
