Is Huntsville the nationâs best small airport? Cast your vote now
A little déjà vu for Huntsville International Airport?
Alabama’s second-busiest airport is again nominated for the nation’s Best Small Airport in the USA Today Readers’ Choice 2023 awards. And if that sounds familiar, it’s because the airport won the online vote for the same award in 2020.
And with just under a month to go in voting this year, Huntsville again sits atop the leaderboard over 19 other airports.

The online description includes Frontier, which no longer operates in Huntsville, and omits Breeze Airways, which is considering adding more routes into and out of the Rocket City. That description also said the airport’s carriers offer nonstop flights to 10 destinations across the country when, in reality, it’s 12 destinations.
Airport carriers Delta, American, United, Silver and Breeze offer service to Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Las Vegas, Orlando, Tampa and Washington (both Reagan National and Dulles).
“The airport is small and easy to navigate, with an on-site hotel and a nice range of food and beverage options for an airport of its size,” the online description said.
When the airport won the online vote in 2020, there were balloons falling from the ceiling and champagne on ice at the announcement. The airport also kicked off a public flirtation with Southwest Airlines in an effort to capitalize on its new distinction as the nation’s best small airport.
Community events were also planned in the coming months to further celebrate. But it all ended less than two months later with the onset of the COVID pandemic that devastated the airline industry.
But the Huntsville airport rebounded and this year is on track to approach its record for passenger traffic set in 2019 with more than 1.4 million travelers.
Huntsville was the only Alabama airport nominated. With Huntsville currently atop the online voting rankings, Long Island MacArthur Airport is second. In third is Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, N.C., followed by Long Beach Airport and Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Rounding out the top 10 are Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wisc., at No. 6, followed by Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport, Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport in Belgrade, Mont., Myrtle Beach International Airport and Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Ky.
Voting is permitted once a day and will continue until Oct. 2 at noon. The 10 winning airports will be announced Oct. 13.
