Is Auburn baseball back? Here’s what we learned from the Tigers series win over Holy Cross
Auburn baseball closed out opening weekend setting a series attendance record of 15,300 total fans inside Plainsman Park.
After falling 4-2 on Saturday, the Tigers defeated Holy Cross 14-6 Sunday afternoon winning its first series of the season.
Cooper McMurray’s bottom of the sixth home run sent two runners’ home as Auburn scored five runs that inning.
After Friday night’s victory, Eric Snow said the scouting report for this series was watching everything over the plate.
“We thought we had a really good scouting report and wanted to see the ball over the plate,” Snow said. “[Gabe Gross] did a good job getting us prepared for that. I saw a slider and was ready to hit it.”
Auburn ended the series with 30 total hits, finishing Sunday’s contest with 16. However, the pitching core was just as elite totaling 29 strikeouts.
The Tigers used three pitchers Friday with neither giving up a run. Senior Samuel Dutton struck out a career high seven batters in his first four innings Saturday. Jackson Sanders closed out the game with a strikeout and double play before throwing a scoreless seventh inning.
Christian Chatterton pitched 5.1 innings Sunday leading the way with five strikeouts for the Tigers.
Head coach Butch Thompson spoke on the new look pitching rotation fans will see this season.
“These guys have been amazing,” head coach Butch Thompson said postgame. “They show up early. They work hard. This is one of the best rosters we’ve put together on paper. They come from amazing families, and they have done everything we ask them to do, and we have a whole season in front of us.”
“We just have to stay after it and dig in and fight. Let’s see if we can come out and just be competitive with playing the game and see if we can get settled and play it out a little bit. We have a lot of work to do.”
Auburn will return back to the diamond Tuesday for a home contest against Troy. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
