Is Alabama QB, RB, DT or DB U?

For the sixth year in a row, Alabama had the most former players on NFL 53-man rosters for the opening weekend of the season.

By the NFL’s count, 57 former Alabama players were on active rosters – 10 more than provided by No. 2 Ohio State.

But even with the top number, the Crimson Tide was shortchanged by the NFL.

The league used the college from which the player entered the NFL in the count, so Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Ford, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Denver Broncos linebacker Drew Sanders didn’t count toward Alabama’s tally even though Ford and Sanders played two seasons apiece for the Crimson Tide and Hurts played three.

Georgia with 46 players, LSU with 43 and Michigan with 38 completed the top-five talent providers for Week 1. With 28 players, Auburn ranked 13th.

Alabama provided the most quarterbacks with three, even without counting Hurts, and the most running backs with six, even without counting Ford.

Alabama also had the most alumni at defensive tackle with 10 and defensive back with 15.

Auburn was tied for the most kickers with two – Anders Carlson of the Green Bay Packers and Daniel Carlson of the Las Vegas Raiders.

The colleges who provided the most players on Week 1 active rosters at each position, by the NFL’s count, were:

Center: Three apiece from Arkansas, LSU, Ohio State, Washington and Wisconsin

Guard: Five each from Clemson, Michigan and Notre Dame

Offensive tackle: Five apiece from Florida, Ohio State and Oklahoma

Kicker: Two each from Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Southern, Memphis and Notre Dame.
