IRS has a Presidents Day warning
The Internal Revenue Service is bracing for a peak week for taxpayers seeking answers. The best solution, the tax agency said, is to go online before you call.
The IRS said it anticipates “peak demand” for phone lines around the Presidents Day holiday on Monday, Feb. 19 and the two weeks that follow. The result could be longer-than-expected wait times.
“We’ve worked hard to provide better taxpayer service for people this filing season with more options to reach the IRS in convenient ways,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said. “We want taxpayers to have access to the help they need around the clock. IRS.gov’s expanded tools and information make that easier for taxpayers, especially during this peak period for IRS phone lines around Presidents Day.”
Instead, the IRS recommends people use self-help tools available online to get filing information, including how to speed up your refund by filing electronically and choosing direct deposit for faster refunds.
Taxpayers with an income of $79,000 or less can also use IRS Free File Guided Tax Software to complete their returns. Free File Fillable Forms are available at no cost to taxpayers with any income level and provide electronic forms that people fill out and and e-file themselves at no cost.
