IRS changes tax deadline in 2 Alabama counties due to tornadoes

The Internal Revenue Service has changed the tax filing deadline for storm victims in two Alabama counties.

Storms victims in parts of Alabama and Georgia now have until May 15 to file various federal individual and business returns and make tax payments. The change covers residents in Autauga and Dallas counties in Alabama, as well as Butts, Henry, Jasper, Meriwether, Newton, Spalding and Troup counties in Georgia.

Other areas could be added to the disaster declaration in the future, the IRS said.

No April 15 deadline: Tax filing day changed for 2023

Tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred starting in Jan. 12. Affected individuals and businesses will have until May 15 to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due during that period.

This includes 2022 individual income tax returns due on April 18, as well as various 2022 business returns normally due on March 15 and April 18. Among other things, this means that eligible taxpayers will have until May 15 to make 2022 contributions to their IRAs and health savings accounts.

Filing and penalty relief are automatically applied to anyone living in the counties and taxpayers do not need to contact the agency. If you do receive a notice of a late filing or payment penalty, call the number on the notice to have the penalty abated.
