Irrigation is no solution in Alabama, where a garden’s biggest problem is too much water

It’s like hauling coal to Newcastle! It’s like piping oil to Saudia Arabia!

That’s what I think every time I hear folks talk about installing irrigation in Alabama. There’s not a place in the state that doesn’t get substantially more rainfall than the Seattle airport. Some places get almost twice as much.

Alabama’s rainfall is exceptional even in the humid southeast. On average, the state of Alabama gets almost 25% more rainfall than Georgia or the Carolinas. Huntsville and Birmingham get almost 60% more rain each year than famously lush Asheville, N.C., or infamously swampy Washington, D.C.. Many areas around Mobile get just about double the rainfall of Asheville or D.C. – about 2½ feet more rain per year!
