Irondale private school teacher, basketball coach indicted on sex with student charges
A former teacher and coach at a private school in Jefferson County has been indicted on sex charges involving a student.
A grand jury indicted Gerald Houston Lee, 30, on charges of first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy and school employee soliciting a sex act with a student, according to court records made public Friday.
Lee formerly taught physical education at Jefferson Christian Academy. He also coached the boys’ basketball teams.
Irondale police launched the investigation after they said they were made aware of an inappropriate relationship between Lee and a student. The alleged interaction took place in November 2023.
Authorities said Lee was quickly terminated as a school staff member. School officials did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
Lee’s attorney declined to comment.
The Springville man was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on June 18, jail records show.
Lee went before Jefferson County Judge Michael Streety Friday morning for an Aniah’s Law bond hearing, records show.
Street ruled Lee should be granted bond and set that bond at $60,000 for each of the three felony charges. If released, Streety said, Lee will be placed on home confinement via electronic monitoring, allowed only to go to work if he can show gainful employment.
Lee remained held Friday afternoon.
