Iron Bowl linebackers set to play again in NFL Sunday

For the second straight week, linebacker Rashaan Evans and Eku Leota have been elevated from NFL practice squads and will be eligible to play on Sunday.

Evans (Auburn High School, Alabama) and Leota (Auburn) made their 2023 season debuts last week. For Leota, it was his NFL debut.

A five-year NFL veteran who made 159 tackles for the Atlanta Falcons last season, Evans remained a free agent until signing with the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad on Oct. 12. He made his 2023 debut in Dallas’ 43-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, when he got on the field for seven defensive snaps and 13 special-teams plays.

Leota joined the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted rookie in May. After going through the offseason program, training camp and preseason with Carolina, Leota was released when the Panthers reduced their preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 active players.

Carolina re-signed Leota for its practice squad before the regular season and elevated him for the first time last week. Leota was on the field for six defensive snaps and eight special-teams plays in the Panthers’ 15-13 victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday.

In Week 9 games on Sunday, Carolina hosts the Indianapolis Colts at noon CST and Dallas visits the Philadelphia Eagles at 3:25 p.m.

Two other players with Alabama football roots will be in line to make their 2023 season debuts on Sunday after Saturday transactions.

The Las Vegas Raiders signed linebacker Malik Reed (Dothan High School) to their active roster. Reed started 34 games for the Denver Broncos from 2019 through 2021 and played in 14 for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season.

Released by the Miami Dolphins at the end of the preseason this year, Reed, a college standout for Nevada, signed with Las Vegas’ practice squad, but he has not played this season.

Reed joined the Raiders’ active roster with linebacker Luke Masterson out with a concussion and linebacker Robert Spillane listed as questionable with a hand injury for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants at 3:25 p.m. at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The Kansas City Chiefs elevated running back La’Mical Perine (Theodore High School) from their practice squad, making him eligible for his first regular-season action since 2021.

A fourth-round draft pick from Florida by the New York Jets in 2020, Perine ran for 263 yards and two touchdowns in two seasons with the Jets. In 2022, Perine spent time on the practice squads of the Eagles, Dolphins and Chiefs. While he didn’t play last season, Perine went to Super Bowl LVII with the Chiefs.

Kansas City activated Perine with running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire already ruled out and running back Jerick McKinnon dealing with a groin injury for the Chiefs’ game against the Dolphins at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Deutsche Bank Stadium in Frankfurt, Germany.
