Iowa vs. Tennessee Citrus Bowl preview
Starting Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton surprised many of the Vols faithful when he elected to opt out of the Citrus Bowl to prepare for the NFL Draft, joining a handful of other Tennessee players who will not participate in the tilt. Five-star true freshman Nico Iamaleava is expected to get the nod as the starter for the Volunteers.
This game will pit two of the NCAA’s top defenses against one another, and given the absences on the Tennessee side, it could prove to be a low-scoring affair. The Hawkeyes are allowing a mere 13.3 points per game, while the Vols allow just over 22 points.
On the offensive side of the ball is where Iowa has struggled, having only scored an average of 16.6 points per game. Quarterback Deacon Hill only completed 115 of 244 passing attempts in the regular season for five touchdowns and six interceptions. He also lost five fumbles.
Iowa vs. Tennessee best bets: Under 35.5 points (-115 or better)
With Tennessee missing its starting quarterback and Iowa’s offensive ineffectiveness, expect this to be an old-school defensive slog.
The total has hit the under in each of Iowa’s last eight games, and against a Volunteer defense that is stout against the run (113.8 yards per game), it’s going to be an uphill battle for the Hawkeyes to score points.
Iowa vs. Tennessee best bets: Leshon Williams over 50.5 points (-115 at DraftKings)
In the mood for old-fashioned, ground-and-pound football? That’s what the Citrus Bowl between Tennessee and Iowa is shaping up to be, and Hawkeyes running back Leshon Williams should be the offensive focal point.
Williams has rushed for over 50.5 yards in four of his previous five games, and you should expect the Iowa offense to lean on him heavily against Tennessee.
