Iowa D-lineman suspended for season in gambling probe
Iowa defensive lineman Noah Shannon has been suspended for the entire 2023 season due to his involvement in sports gambling, it was announced Wednesday.
Shannon, a 28-game starter the last two seasons, has not been formally charged with a crime by state investigators. He did say on Aug. 11 that he was cooperating with NCAA investigators.
“They’re taking their time doing their investigation, and I can’t be mad at them for that,” Shannon said. “I mean, I broke a rule. I owned up to it.”
Shannon was an honorable mention All-Big Ten pick a year ago, when he started all 13 games and totaled 44 tackles and 8.5 tackles for loss. The fifth-year senior won the team’s Hayden Fry Award for defense and was among 12 players named to the team’s Leadership Council.
Two current Iowa players, kicker Aaron Blom and receiver Jack Johnson, have been charged with “tampering with records” in the gambling case. They are suspected of making bets on mobile sports wagering accounts despite being under the age of 21.
Several other former Iowa players, including current Troy defensive back Reggie Bracy, have also been charged in the case. Bracy has been indefinitely suspended by the Trojans.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said the school plans to appeal the penalty.
