Intoxicated man with gun arrested at north Alabama middle school, authorities say
A 39-year-old man was arrested after authorities say he showed up intoxicated to a north Alabama middle school parking lot Thursday afternoon with a gun in his vehicle and violated an order of protection taken out against him.
Justin Harold Retherford, 39, of Trinity, was arrested on charges of public intoxication, possession of a firearm on school property and violation of a protection from abuse order following the incident in the East Lawrence Middle School parking lot, the sheriff’s office said.
The school resource officer at East Lawrence School was notified around 1 p.m. Thursday of a “suspicious individual” in the East Lawrence Middle School parking lot.
The officer noticed a handgun Retherford’s vehicle while the suspect was going through the back of his car.
The gun was then secured and Retherford was taken into custody, the sheriff’s office said.
“During the field interview, the suspect was unable to form coherent responses, leading the officer to suspect intoxication,” the sheriff’s office said.
Retherford had an active protection from abuse order filed against him, with the protected person being an East Lawrence School student, authorities said.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The sheriff’s office said additional charges may be forthcoming “once the suspect is coherent enough for questioning.”
The investigation remained ongoing Thursday afternoon and further information was unavailable.
