Interim tag removed: Meet Huntsville City Schools’ new superintendent

The interim tag has been removed from Clarence Sutton’s job title.

The Huntsville City Board of Education approved Sutton’s hiring as superintendent at its board meeting Tuesday night. Sutton – who was the district’s chief of staff – had been serving as interim superintendent following former Superintendent Christie Finley’s retirement on June 1.

“I want to thank this board and this community for trusting me,” Sutton said following the board’s vote. “I’m kind of like Tim Tebow. You will never see someone who will work harder than me to be successful and win your trust. This is all about students and moving students forward.”

Sutton interviewed for the position last week along with two other finalists: Birmingham City Schools Chief Academic and Accountability Officer Jermaine Dawson and Bren Elliot, chief of school improvements and supports with D.C. Public Schools.

“I truly believe that Huntsville City Schools can be the premiere district not only in the state but in the nation,” Sutton said. “I truly believe we have the people, the community and the resources, support and leadership from this group to move us to that level.”
