Injured Eagles QB Jalen Hurts: ‘The man will be there’

Philadelphia coach Nick Sirianni gave his players Monday off after the Eagles defeated the New York Giants 22-16 on Sunday to earn the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs and a bye through the postseason’s first round this weekend.

“This past week has been a crazy week in the NFL and across the world given the circumstances that happened in that Monday night game,” Hurts said, “and there’s so much that we have to be thankful for and grateful for and the opportunities that we have. Why not give it your all while you can? Because you never know when it could be done, so so much to be thankful for. I want to give the game everything I have.”

But that doesn’t mean Hurts won’t get the rest that he helped earn.

The former Alabama standout sustained a sprained throwing shoulder in a 25-20 victory over the Chicago Bears on Dec. 18. Hurts missed the next two games, which Philadelphia lost, putting its hold on the conference’s No. 1 seed in jeopardy. That brought Hurts back to the lineup for the regular-season finale, and the Eagles improved to 14-1 with Hurts on the field this season by beating the Giants.

“It takes what it takes,” Hurts said. “At the end of the day, if you want something done, sometimes you got to do what you got to do.”

After Sunday’s game, Hurts said he felt “good enough to win today,” but Sirianni said the quarterback “was hurting bad.”

“I’m feeling better,” Hurts said on Thursday. “It’s a day-by-day thing. Just taking it day-by-day. I think the whole world knows that I’m dealing with something, been dealing with something. And I think the whole point of that game was coming back and getting done what we needed to get done and, obviously, having this time to rest.”

Asked how close to 100 percent he thought he’d be by the time of next week’s game, Hurts said: “I can’t give you a number. I think that name is that name. The man, the man will be there. … I think we have a lot of guys that need that time so we can all play our best when we need it.”

Hurts said he had played with injuries “a number of times.”

“I’ve always been a man that has embraced everything that’s thrown my way, trying to find ways to overcome it and ultimately make it happen,” Hurts said. “I think there are different challenges that come to you throughout your career, and you have to find a way to look them in the face and face them. I’m fortunate to be where I am now and fortunate to see how far we’ve come as a team when you think about all the different challenges that have come across this year, and we’ve been able to overcome them, so now the best thing that you could ask for is to essentially be in a position like we’re in right now, and that’s something we want to take advantage of.

“It comes from the work. There’s nothing more we have to do other than being ourselves. We have to be unwavering, be diligent in this whole entire process, but approach it the same. We’ve been a team that has focused on getting better every day this whole entire time, so nothing changes.”

The Eagles will play the lowest remaining NFC team after the Super Wild-Card Weekend games. That could be any of four teams. While the opponent is uncertain, Philadelphia will play at Lincoln Financial Field until it is eliminated or reaches Super Bowl LVII.

“I think it’ll be fun,” Hurts said. “Just being in the Linc, having our home fans here. We obviously travel well, but being in this city, in Philly, I’m excited to see the atmosphere. I know it’s going to be electric.”

The NFC playoffs kick off at 3:30 p.m. CST Saturday when the No. 7 Seattle Seahawks visit the No. 2 San Francisco 49ers. At 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the No. 6 New York Giants visit the No. 3 Minnesota Vikings. At 7:15 p.m. Monday, the No. 5 Dallas Cowboys visit the No. 4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
