Indictment handed down against suspect in slayings of 3 family members, friend in Daphne

A 22-year-old Bay Minette man has been indicted by a Mobile County Grand Jury on four counts of capital murder in the deaths of three of his family members and a friend in February 2023.

Jared Tarant Smith-Bracy has been in custody without bond since he was arrested Feb. 23, 2023 after the bodies of his grandparents, his brother, and a family friend were found dead at a home in Daphne. The indictment was returned last Friday.

Smith-Bracy is accused of forcibly entering the house before shooting his grandmother, 72-year-old Barbara Smith; his brother, 27-year-old Jeremy Smith; and 71-year-old Shelia Glover – all three who were found dead in the backyard – and then returning to the house and bludgeoning 80-year-old Leonard Smith, his grandfather, with a pickaxe.

No motive for the killings has been publicly disclosed, but earlier on the day of the killings Smith-Bracy was arrested and booked into Daphne municipal jail on a charge of criminal mischief. According to authorities, he had damaged a door at the family’s home, prompting someone at the house to call police.

Smith-Bracy reportedly got a ride back to the home after bonding out of jail that day, using a gun owned by the driver to kill three of the victims. Police said at the time the driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was unaware of Smith-Bracy’s intent. The driver also reportedly called 911 after hearing the gunshots and went directly to a Daphne police station.

At his arraignment in February 2023, Smith-Bracy pleaded not guilty due to mental defect. A mental evaluation was ordered in February of this year, according to court records.

With the indictment handed down, Smith-Bracy will continue to be held without bond as the case moves forward. If ultimately found guilty, he would be eligible for the death penalty.
