Indiana man allegedly set fire to Alabama house in attempt to kill someone over custody dispute

Investigators believe an Indiana man set fire to a Lauderdale County home in 2020 in hopes of killing its occupants.

John W. Morrison, 43, of New Ross, Ind., was arrested Monday following an investigation by the Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office. He has been charged with attempted murder and first degree arson.

According to court documents, Morrison’s arrest stems from a fire on Aug. 27, 2020 at 3 a.m. at a residence on County Road 53 in Anderson in Lauderdale County.

An affidavit states that investigators received a tip that Morrison doused the front porch of the home with gasoline and set it on fire. Authorities believe his aim was to kill a person inside who is related to a divorce and custody case in Indiana that affected Morrison’s family.

At the time of the fire, according to court documents, Morrison rented a cabin at Joe Wheeler State Park.

A forensic analysis of debris from the front porch showed flammable liquids had been used.
