Indiana fires football coach Tom Allen, reports say
Indiana has fired head football coach Tom Allen, according to multiple reports.
The 53-year-old Allen went 33-49 in seven years as head coach of the Hoosiers, who completed their season at 3-9 with a 35-31 loss to Purdue on Saturday. It was Indiana’s third straight season of four or fewer victories.
Indiana went a combined 13-8 with back-to-back bowl appearances in 2019 and 2020, a run that earned Allen a lucrative contract extension. He will reportedly be owed more than $20 million in buyout money over the next four years.
An Indiana native, Allen was previously defensive coordinator with the Hoosiers in 2016 before taking over when Kevin Wilson resigned at the end of that season. He was defensive coordinator at South Florida in 2015 and was on Hugh Freeze’s staffs at Ole Miss (2012-14), Arkansas State (2011) and Lambuth (2008-09).
One name who has already been mentioned as a potential replacement for Allen is South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack, who was linebackers coach and then defensive coordinator at Indiana from 2018-20. Wommack was a Broyles Award finalist for his work with the Hoosiers’ defense in 2020, and remains immensely popular in Bloomington.
Allen’s ouster means there are now five Power 5 head-coaching openings, along with Texas A&M, Syracuse, Mississippi State and Oregon State. The Aggies were reportedly set to hire Kentucky’s Mark Stoops before a deal broke down late Saturday.
Mississippi State has reportedly targeted Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby to fill its opening. Oregon State remains very early in its search after Jonathan Smith left to take the Michigan State job on Saturday.
