Incumbents cruising to re-election in Madison, Limestone local elections

Incumbents were on track to sweep the handful of contested local races in Madison and Limestone counties, according to unofficial election results late Tuesday.

With 82.5% of votes counted, Madison County Commission Chair Mac McCutcheon, a former state legislator and speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives, led two challengers in his first election since being appointed to the at-large position last year. McCutcheon was pulling 53.98% of the vote, ahead of Democrat Guy G. Sotomayor III (39.68%) and Libertarian Alan F. Barksdale (6.19%).

The five other county commissioners who faced opponents – all of the challengers were Libertarians — appeared to be heading to re-election, as did Probate Judge Frank Barger. Republican incumbent Craig W. Hill ran unopposed in District 3.

In Limestone County, two commission races were up for election. In District 4, first-term incumbent LaDon Townsend comfortably led Republican Dawn Craig with 16 of 17 polling sites reporting results.

In District 2, Republican Johnny Turner led Democrat Roger G. Williams by more than a two-to-one margin for the seat currently held by Commissioner Danny Barksdale.
